Every year, the Pantone Color Institute selects a shade that it believes will capture the mood of the moment. For 2024, it was Peach Fuzz. And as Pantone revealed on Thursday, December 5, now it’s Mocha Mousse, a soft, nougat-y brown that connects to the fashion world’s ongoing obsession with gourmand trends (glazed doughnut makeup and latte dressing among them).
“There’s this whole ‘foodification’ of color that we’ve seen come into being,” Laurie Pressman, the executive director of Pantone, told Vogue. “It’s not just a matter of taste. It’s also talking about our surroundings, our clothing — when you look at a color and say, ‘Oh, it’s absolutely delicious,’ it’s not necessarily just because it’s edible, but because it’s so appealing to you.”
Like the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, Mocha Mousse has a warm, comforting vibe well worth indulging in. “It’s about our desire for everyday pleasures,” Pressman continued.
She also pointed toward the rise of the viral rich-mom aesthetic and quiet luxury trend as further proof that “aspirational” brown hues will continue to have staying power in the year ahead.
