Local girls flag football teams enjoy taking part in L.A. Rams Jamboree
Newbury Park and Chatsworth were among the 130 teams that attended the event Saturday that included panel discussions with women in sports.
Most of the Southern California high school girls flag football programs are about a quarter of the way through the season. League play is beginning and the playoffs will be held in late October.
Several teams from the Daily News area took a moment this past weekend to enjoy the journey by taking part in the second annual Los Angeles Rams Jamboree. The event brought together 130 schools Saturday at UCLA for competition on the field and for an opportunity to take part in discussions with executives for the Rams and women in sports.
Among the area schools present was Newbury Park.
“It was a great experience for the girls,” said Panthers head coach Steven Wood. “Seeing the various teams in the different regions all come out really showed the growth of the sport. Seeing all the passionate girls of all sizes and athleticism. Every single one of them had a smile on their face and loved the experience.”
The Panthers played two games Saturday that consisted of two 12-minute halves. Their first game was a 14-6 loss to Carlsbad but the Panthers won their second game 14-6 against Mira Costa. It was their second win of the season.
Other local schools at the event included Chatsworth, Agoura, Fillmore, Panorama City, Crenshaw, El Camino Real, San Fernando, Sylmar, Valencia, Kennedy, and La Cañada.
Chatsworth began its inaugural season at the Rams Jamboree by taking on Academy of Our Lady of Peace and Point Loma.
The Chancellors lost both games but made the most of their opportunities at the Rams Jamboree.
“It was so much fun and awesome to see all the hundreds of teams out there,” said Chatsworth head coach Niccole Ryan. “It was a great first experience for flag football for us. Seeing how quick the game is and the girls had a great time. It was a well-planned event.”
Westlake beats Oak Park
Westlake (7-3) extended its win streak to three games with a 27-18 win over Oak Park (6-4) on Tuesday.
Westlake’s defense fought off a late comeback by the Eagles and the offense was led by quarterback Makayla Velasquez, who threw four touchdown passes with no interceptions.
Ava Bowers, Gia Hinman, Melaina Servé and Anaiyah Nevarez each caught one touchdown pass for Westlake.
